Detroit Soul Food Sistas On The Go Restaurant Review

Detroit, what up doe? You will find Detroit Soul Food Sistas in Phoenix on the northeast corner of 19th Ave and Indian School. The location used to be occupied by Jerk Hut Jamaican Grille.

Phoenix has generally lacked a true soul food scene, and the ones that pop up typically don’t last. With that said, my reaction to Detroit Soul Food Sistas On The Go was like… “FINALLY!”

I suspect the owners are definitely new to business. Logistically, there were some hiccups. But if you decide to pull up, consider calling the restaurant to place the order in advance.

Detroit Soul Food Sistas On The Go is mainly designed for takeout. There is a small dining room with a few booths and bar tables.

The menu was a bit large for a newer restaurant. They had catfish, lobster bites, king crab legs, pork chops, and a lot more. The Uber Eats menu currently shows at least 10 available side items (wow). Whenever a menu is too big, almost surely something will be out of stock. Luckily, everything I ordered was available.

It was tricky to decide what to order (everything sounded good). But I ultimately copped the 1 meat and 2 sides combo plate. For the meat, I chose hot honey chicken wings. There were roughly four flavor options for chicken.

For the sides, I chose collard greens with mac and cheese. All meals include a cornbread muffin. Drinks are not included in the price.

When your order is ready, they open the container and show you the food to ensure it is correct. This is good practice! But yo… this was probably the best looking plate of food I’ve ever seen in a black styrofoam container. These sistas can cook!

The first thing I tried were the collards. They were cooked with smoked turkey. Interestingly, the collards had more meat than usual: maybe 40% meat to 60% collard greens.

Next, I tested the mac and cheese. You typically don’t see herbs in mac, but I guess they do it differently in the “D.” In all honesty, this was one of the best mac and cheese iterations I have tried.

The honey hot wings were good. They reminded me of Asian-flavored chicken wings. You can see they were well seasoned. Could have sworn the hot honey sauce had a hint of alcohol in it.

I was expecting the cornbread to be super sweet. But it was only modestly sweetened, which is fine. With cornbread, you don’t have to do too much and I feel it complemented everything on the plate.

The only drink I saw on the menu was Kool-Aid. Although a Coke sign was mounted near the front counter. I will definitely be back to try more of Detroit Soul Food Sistas On The Go. This restaurant is Justin Leonard Approved.
