D-Mac & Wings Restaurant Review

I finally got to try D-Mac & Wings, a soul food restaurant in Mesa. If you’ve never heard of it, the “D” is for Detroit.

Ironically, a few of my earlier food reviews had Detroit origins: Detroit Soul Food Sistas and VIA 313.

D-Mac & Wings is located on Country Club and about a half mile north of University. It is not directly visible from the road [or even the parking lot] because of the shopping center’s architecture.

An exterior support wall blocks the entire view of the front entrance. However, there is a monument sign along Country Club Road to offer guidance.

This is a smaller restaurant with an emphasis on to-go orders. Yes, you can dine in, but the food will still be prepared to go.

Also, this is not fast food. Everything at D-Mac & Wings is made to order.

The menu features both comfort and soul food. To me, comfort food is burgers, fries, sloppy Joes, Detroit-style hot dogs, and chicken wings.

But there are also plenty of soul food staples. For example, mac and cheese, collard greens, catfish, banana pudding, and peach cobbler.

During my visit, I sampled nearly half the menu: 6-piece wings (mango habanero), deep fried hot link, sloppy Joe, mac n cheese, and peach cobbler.

The wings come with a Hawaiian sweet roll and side of ranch. No doubt.

The deep fried hot link was certified legit. It is a spicy hot dog with ketchup and mustard. Cool.

I was surprised to see the sloppy Joe on the menu, and because it had been so long since I had one, I added it to the order.

I think this is an underrated menu item. The D-Mac & Wings sloppy Joe was one of the best.

Another thing I want to highlight is they use way better buns than most restaurants. You can see and taste the difference.

The mac n cheese…

A lot of these photos won’t tell the whole story. You gotta try it. When it comes to mac, there are different iterations. This is a really good mac.

If we are talkin’ dry vs creamy mac, it will be more on the dry side. But still very much on point.

Detroit, what up doe?

While awaiting my food, I texted a buddy to report that I had finally arrived at D-Mac & Wings. Of all the menu items he could have suggested… the burgers, the catfish, the shrimp… the dude said, “Get the cobbler!!”

So, I went back in line to get the cobbler. And when I say the pics don’t do it justice, I mean it. This is one of the better cobblers out there. No doubt.

My overall review:

I gotta crown ’em with the Justin Leonard Approved signature stamp. I am looking forward to my next visit to try the rest of the menu; especially the banana pudding, shrimp, burgers, and Kool-Aid.

I was thoroughly impressed with the food quality and flavors at D-Mac & Wings. It’s a solid joint fo’ sho. Salute.
