TEXAZ Grill Restaurant Review
When was the last time you had chicken fried steak? Recently, I got to try the food as TEXAZ Grill. The name creatively merges the words “Texas” and “AZ.”
They are located in Phoenix on the northeast corner of 16th Street and Bethany Home Road. Just look for the blue sign with the words, “WORLD FAMOUS CHICKEN FRIED STEAK.”

In the south, country fried steak, chicken fried steak, and any other fried steak are everywhere. In Arizona, it is nearly impossible to find. And in general, home-style cooking restaurant concepts are not as popular as they once were.
So, I was eager to test the chicken fried steak at TEXAZ Grill to see how it compared to deep south staples like Luby’s, Morrison’s Cafeteria, Golden Corral, and Old Country Buffet.
Once inside, you will see tons of vintage signage on the walls, lots of neon lighting, and Texas state flags throughout.

I was there specifically for the chicken fried steak, so I didn’t bother to look at the full menu. The lunch special includes the chicken fried steak, “award winning” mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, and a buttermilk biscuit.

TEXAZ Grill makes their signature dish using cubed beef steak. They then double dip it in batter and fry it. I’m told they make nearly everything on the menu from scratch.

I probably should have checked the full menu because they had a lot of southern classics that I miss, like Frito pie, which used to be on the menu at Sonic Drive-Ins back in the day: Frito’s, chili, cheese
Most of the TEXAZ Grill menu was definitely from the south: brisket, steak, catfish, pork chops, fried chicken, burgers, and gravy. Yes, I gotta create a whole lane for gravy.

Depicted below was another highlighted menu item, Chopped BBQ Brisket On Bun. Let me know if you notice anything interesting about the bun.

Uh, should brisket ever be minced down this much? Let’s discuss… They add homemade BBQ sauce and garnish it with a pickle spear and onion slice.
It is served with your choice of regular fries or TEXAZ fries, which are potatoes; maybe a cross between potato wedges and breakfast-style home fries (without onion). Their regular fries are giant steak fries.

By the way, many of the sides, desserts, and extras are served in a coffee mug. One of the menu headings reads, “SUPPER.” No doubt.
Everything was good. I would put them on par with maybe a Texas Roadhouse. The breading on the chicken fried steak had a bit more crunch to it than normal, which I think made it better.

One thing I really liked that TEXAZ Grill did [that Gus’s Fried Chicken didn’t do] was include butter with the bread.
The south never, ever eats plain white bread, biscuits, or anything… without butter! If you show up without the butter, we gon’ give you dat look.
Thank you TEXAZ Grill for getting this right. Peace
